Outdoor spaces add comfort and extra room to homes, hotels, and businesses. However, tough weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow, strong winds, and intense sunlight, can damage outdoor furniture if it is not stored properly.
Storing furniture properly helps protect their investment for homeowners. Planning for maintenance can save money by reducing how often furniture needs to be replaced and lowering customer complaints for retailers, hotel managers, and real estate developers. Even when you buy from a trusted outdoor furniture maker, how you store your furniture matters to keep it in good shape. Here we will explain how to store your outdoor furniture during bad weather and how to keep it durable all year round.
Understand How Weather Affects Outdoor Furniture
It is important to understand how different weather can cause damage before you plan where and how to store your furniture. Even though quality outdoor furniture from a good manufacturer is made to last, it still needs care and protection from harsh weather to stay in great condition.
- Heavy Rain and Moisture: Long periods of rain can make wood swell, metal rust, and fabric grow mold. Even materials that resist water can get weaker if they stay wet for too long.
- Snow and Ice: Snow adds extra weight that can strain and damage furniture. When snow melts and freezes again, water can get into small cracks and joints, causing more harm.
- Strong Sunlight: Too much sun can fade fabrics and dry out wood. UV rays can also weaken some materials over time.
Clean Your Furniture Before Storing It
Putting away dirty furniture can cause stains, mold, and bad smells. So, cleaning your furniture first is very important. Make sure everything is completely dry before you store it. Moisture trapped in furniture can cause mold to grow.
Remove Dust and Debris
Use a soft brush or cloth to wipe off dirt. Make sure to clear out leaves and debris from corners because they can hold moisture.
Wash Surfaces Gently
Clean with mild soap and water for metal or plastic furniture. You should use a slightly damp cloth and dry it right away for wood.
Clean Cushions Properly
Follow the fabric care instructions that come with your cushions. Many outdoor furniture makers include cleaning tips with their products.
Prevent Mold and Rust on Outdoor Furniture
Moisture is the biggest reason furniture gets damaged during bad weather. If you store furniture in a closed space, make sure there is some air movement. Sealing the area completely can trap moisture and cause problems.
Items like silica gel packs or other moisture-absorbing products can help keep the air dry inside storage areas. Good-quality furniture from a trusted maker usually has protective coatings. However, taking these extra steps helps your furniture last even longer.
Pick the Best Place to Store Your Outdoor Furniture
Where you keep your outdoor furniture makes a big difference in keeping it safe and in good shape. You should also avoid putting furniture directly on soil or grass for long periods. This is because it can cause damage.
Indoor Storage
Garages, storage rooms, or covered sheds are the best spots. These places protect your furniture from rain, snow, and strong sunlight. If you do not have much space, choosing stackable or foldable furniture can help save room. Many people like these options when buying from outdoor commercial furniture manufacturer makers.
Covered Outdoor Spaces
If you cannot store furniture indoors, a covered patio or balcony works well. Just make sure to lift the furniture a little off the ground so water does not collect underneath.
How to Use Protective Covers the Right Way?
Using covers is one of the easiest ways to keep your outdoor furniture safe. Remember, covers are not a full replacement for storing furniture indoors during bad weather. They work best as extra protection.
Pick Weather-Resistant Covers
Look for covers that are waterproof but also let air pass through. This helps to stop moisture from getting trapped inside.
Make Sure Covers Stay Secure
Wind can blow covers off if they are loose. Use straps or elastic edges to keep covers snug and in place. Many outdoor furniture makers sell covers made just for their products. So, they fit better and protect more.
Simple Tips to Make Your Outdoor Furniture Last Longer
A few easy actions can help protect your furniture from weather damage. These simple steps help keep your outdoor furniture in good shape and save you money on repairs later.
- Take Apart Big Pieces When You Can: If your furniture has parts that come off, remove them. This lowers stress on the joints and makes storing easier. It also helps prevent damage from strong winds.
- Keep Cushions Indoors: Fabric cushions soak up moisture and can develop mold or fade. Store them inside in a dry place to keep them fresh.
- Check Your Furniture Before and After Storage: Look for loose screws, rust, or cracks. Fixing small problems early stops bigger issues down the road.
Storage Tips for Different Outdoor Furniture Materials
Different materials need special care, especially during bad weather. Knowing how to care for each material helps your outdoor furniture stay in great shape for longer.
Wooden Furniture
Clean your wooden furniture and make sure it is completely dry before storing. Applying a protective oil or sealant before winter can help stop cracks. If you can, store wood furniture indoors because too much moisture can make the wood swell or change shape.
Metal Frames
Check metal furniture for scratches on the protective coating. Even small scratches can cause rust if they get wet. Wipe the furniture clean before storing. If the manufacturer suggests it, add a light protective layer.

- Plan Storage Ahead of Time: It is important for these places to make a storage plan before bad weather hits. This helps prevent damage from sudden storms.

- Choose Furniture Made for Easy Storage: Working with a trusted outdoor furniture maker lets businesses get pieces designed for storage, like foldable chairs and modular seating, making the process much simpler.
